FROM ENGLAND TO AMERICA

A Family Migration

Our family history begins in England in the 1600's, and goes to the present.
The earliest known ancestor on my Milks line was born in England, where the surname has been associated with the county of Norfolk, where it appears about twenty-two times in proportion to each 10,000 of the population of that county. There throughout English history it has been associated with small landowners.1

History of the Milk Surname

The surname appears in England as "Melc" in Doomsday or Domesday Book which was begun upon the order William the Conqueror in 1080 and completed in 1086.2

The name Milk is variously stated to originate as follows: from German, Milich, Milke, and it is classified among personal names;3 from old Norse, Mylki, a rustic, one who milks, or likely a diminutive of Milo, Miles.4 Of still older derivation was the name Milk in use for Phoenician Gods, where it was used in a sense akin to that of Baal, Babylonian Bel, among those of Biblical allusion. These were not proper names, but a description of the deity as owner or mistress, and in the case of Milk meaning king, lord, or mother.5 Thus, the name is of very ancient association.

The surname of Milk first appears on record in America in 1662 with mention of John Milk of Salem, Massachusetts....

In Ms. Croft's book, she has a final chapter entitled Unfinished Research, in which she lists families that had not been included as descendants of this John Milk.

Some of his descendants spell their name Milk while others have added an "s" changing it to Milks.

Much of my information has come from History and Genealogy of the Milk-Milks Family by Grace Croft, reprinted by Higginson Books. Visit their site, as they have many genealogical, family history and other publications. They reprint from the originals, it takes eight to twelve weeks to get your order, but it is well worth the wait.
I am using facts from Ms. Croft's book with their permission.

This site is dedicated to my branch of John Milks' descendants.

I have not been researching this family for very long, and the information I have has not all been fully verified by me, so I am offering it as a help to other researchers in hopes that between us we may fully authenticate it.

If you find a connection, an error or have further information, please contact me. I will remove any erroneous data and add new, if that is your desire.
